Pantone's 'Colour of the Year' is the boring but reliable friend we deserve in 2020
As blue as our 2019 mood
These last few years have been quite the shit show. Climate change is literally raining all over our parade while politicians stand in the deluge tweeting that it’s #fakenews. David Bowie, Prince, Sridevi, George Michael and Alan Rickman passed away. Barack Obama was replaced by The Apprentice.
It’s been a tiresome whirlwind leaving us feeling more divided as a society than ever. The shade queens at Pantone see it and their Colour of the Year 2020 wants to be our comfort blanket.

Classic Blue is a safe choice, considering their more vivacious past selections – Living Coral, Ultra Violet and Greenery. Those were unique, standout colours that’d make you go “Hmm, I wouldn’t wear anything in this shade but wow, I wish I did.” Classic Blue, on the other hand, inspires no ill will or regret. It’s something both you, Dadi and the caterer can wear at the next family gathering.

Overall, kind of meh, but their sentiment is what hits home. “Instilling calm, confidence, and connection, this enduring blue hue highlights our desire for a dependable and stable foundation on which to build as we cross the threshold into a new era,” they write. Pantone’s Classic Blue will be entering the Miss Universe contest and finally achieving that promise of world peace.
Society is crumbling and falling apart, so we need a solid Classic Blue to be the one thing (and probably the only thing) that we can all agree on to at least be… adequate. It’s “non-aggressive and easily relatable” unlike our generational gaps.
“Honest and offers the promise of protection” unlike the toxic relationships in our lives that we just want to Marie Kondo the eff out.
It’s the metaphorical water that hopes to extinguish the the flaming condition of our planet, and our collective minds.

Maybe a good solid blue is what we needed to instil a “sense of peace and tranquillity to the human spirit, offering refuge.”
Save us from ourselves, Classic Blue.
