Where do you get the best fish curry in India?
A soulful, bowlful of goodness
There isn’t a foodie worth their Himalayan pink salt who doesn’t have a go-to fish curry of choice. Fish curry preparations are so personal. With variations, secret ingredients, twists and tangs that differ from coast to coast, river to sea fish.
The piquant deliciousness of a mustard-y Bengal fish curry contrasts against the warm tingle of a light Kerala-style curry, full of kokum goodness.
Fish curry is comfort food for when you’re missing mummy ka maachh bhaat.
With the variety in flavours, ingredients and fish options, it’s hard to pick a favourite. So, we enlisted the tastebuds of chef Rachel Goenka @rachelgoenka and stand-up comedian Supriya Joshi @supaarwoman to help us decide.
Warning: Scenes of Joshi in distress as a bone gets lodged in her throat might bring up some uncomfortable childhood memories for you.
Goenka offers her advice on dealing with a bony fish, so as to avoid such catastrophes in the future. “Get the fish filleted,” she laughs. “You could always ask someone you love, or your mother, to clean it for you.”
With Goenka’s knowledge and Joshi’s witty sensibilities, we got the perfect match to try out the many tasty offerings available in India.
So which curry style makes you happiest?
