The best of Oscars 2020 fashion, from someone who doesn't understand fashion
Can we all wear pyjamas in public now?
Fashion is complicated. Especially for someone who owns 10 pairs of black T-shirts that are rotated depending on which one doesn’t have a dal stain on it. Which is why this guide to Oscars 2020 fashion is not going to be filled with obscure technical terms and confusing French words like ‘couture’, ‘Yves Saint Laurent’ and ‘baguette’.
Admittedly, I’m no Anna Wintour, but I am an easily distracted individual who loves to day-dream (especially when I absolutely have no time to). Just like you, I scroll through my feed analysing celebrity style while deadlines crash and burn all around me.
On occasion, I imagine myself strutting down red carpets, asking Billy Porter to adopt me or staring at Scarlett Johansson’s impossible perfection until security asks me to move along.
And that’s precisely what happened when the Oscars 2020 fashion began to pop up on my mobile screen.
So, in no particular order, here are the looks we should be celebrating.

Billie Eilish
The last time I attended the Academy Awards, I too was in my pyjamas (sound asleep, and making a fashion statement that Meryl Streep was all for). So, that’s one point for relatability.
Also, the way the bottoms cascade down Eilish’s legs, the don’t-even-have-to-put-on-a-bra-ness of the top… this Oscars 2020 fashion look is what couch potato heiress’ dreams are made of.
P.S. Her nails made me think of my 8-month-old kitten’s claws that she uses to create bloody abstract art on my arms, and that definitely helped her case.

Sandy Powell
Sandy Powell was on fire. Yes, I am referring to her hair in the shade flaming cheetos orange, that you cannot look away from. That and the costume designer’s DIY approach to her Oscars 2020 red carpet look – she wore a cream suit autographed by Hollywood A-listers that she plans on auctioning through the Art Fund charity. What’s not to like?

Billy Porter
I have to confess that this one isn’t about the clothes but the person wearing them. The tuxedo gown on the Oscars 2019 red carpet, the peek-a-boo hat at the Grammys, and now this golden eagle meets grandma’s drapes moment – Porter’s aesthetic might take some time to wrap your head around, but the message he’s sending makes all his red carpet looks iconic.

Scarlett Johansson
This is the platform that I have chosen to award my boyfriend with a celebrity free pass (only applicable if Johansson decides to appear before him looking like this). I mean, look at her! Forget the boyfriend, Johansson looking like a mermaid wrapped in shiny seaweed is my new celebrity pass.

Dianne Ladd
Laura Dern might have walked away with the Actress in a Supporting Role award, but her mother walked away with all our hearts. The American actress, film director, producer and author is most definitely going to be the latest addition to “the coolest grandmothers I aspire to be when I grow up“list.
