10-minute abs workout: How to tone your tummy
Minimal time, maximum results
‘I have six-pack abs, I just keep them protected with a layer of fat’ — if I had a rupee for every time I milked this old joke, I’d be able to buy a prosthetic version of Jennifer Lopez’s abs to stick over my not-so-flat belly. JLo spends half her day sweating through a rigorous abs workout, and while we may dream of losing weight or being fit enough to run a marathon without fainting halfway, the lure of galouti kebabs can waylay even the noblest intentions.
And there’s no way we’re getting through 100 crunches — unless they’re spaced out over an equal number of days…
That’s where our favourite holistic practice yoga wins. Just like it has helped us sleep better and calm anxiety, it’s also got a few simple exercises that you need to turn to if you’re in the market for a flat tummy.
10-minute abs workout
We join forces with yoga teacher Arezu Kaywanfar who shows us the yoga-powered abs workout that will help you tone your tummy. But first things first. You really are what you eat. And Kaywanfar reminds us, 70 per cent of our abs are made in the kitchen – and she cautions the most enthusiastic of gym bunnies that as important as working out is, eating right is way more important. She says, “So be aware of what you eat, how much, what time — because that will support you in having the six-pack that you desire.”
Working out may only be 30 per cent of it, but it’s crucial and Kaywanfar’s flat tummy is proof enough for us. She takes us through a range of yoga-led moves in this abs workout, from the navasana ( the boat pose) and a few iterations of it, including one that turns into the good old Russian twist to the bicycle and reverses bicycle pose, to whip you into shape.
