Break up with brain rot at these 7 creative retreats in India
Let your cup of inspiration runneth over
A few decades ago, robots and AI were seen as the ultimate force destined to take over the world and replace humans. It was a common topic in school debates and the central theme of several films, where robots were like Gabbar, and humans were the helpless residents of Ramgarh. Fast forward to today, and this prediction is partially true. Tools like ChatGPT, Gemini AI and others are giving humans tough competition, blending speed and creativity in ways that are reshaping jobs and industries.
While technology advances, our reliance on low-quality, fast-consumption content is taking a toll on our creativity and turning our brains rotten. To keep our creative edge, we need to actively take a step back and nurture our minds. That means breaking away from the digital jungle gym and escaping the constant loop of Butterfly Butterfly videos (yes, we see you). It’s no longer about only sunning in Goa or Bali, it’s about giving your mind the break and space to get those creative juices flowing again.
For those looking to feel inspired, cure writer’s block, or simply calm a cluttered mind, stepping into a creative retreat can be transformative. Whether it’s through art, mindfulness, or simply giving your brain the break it deserves, these seven creative retreats in India offer the perfect digital detox to rejuvenate your mind, body, and hopefully reverse some of that brain rot.
7 creative retreats in India that’ll calm your cluttered mind
Set your watch to clay play o’ clock
As kids, playing with clay dough was necessary to develop gross motor skills so we could learn to jump to conclusions and run from our feelings. But as adults, pottery can be a gateway to experiencing mental stillness, expressing creativity and sharpening your focus. If you’re yearning to learn a new skill, away from the bustling city, schedule a visit to this pottery studio.
Nestled in the foothills of the Dhauladhar range in Himachal Pradesh is Andretta Pottery, dates way back to 1985 and is known to be one of the oldest pottery studios in the region. It offers a seven-day retreat, where you get to learn techniques like hand-building and wheel-throwing, firing the pots and taking your creations home. At the moment they host it twice a year, once in December and once around February-March. Spots are given on a first-come, first-serve basis and you can DM their Instagram to reserve your spot.
You get to disconnect from Zoom meetings and Excel sheets and get your hands dirty with the Himalayan terracotta mitti to create beautiful earthen pots and plates under the guidance of the resident pottery masters. They even have three-month courses twice a year and a 45-minute experiential for those who’re just visiting.
Cost: ₹86,000 approx for the seven-day retreat.

Chakrasan your way into 2025

While you don’t need to be an expert yogi, whenever a retreat is announced, Jogh’s team recommends taking a 10-day beginner class on their website.

Experience sustainable pahadi life
Trekking the trails, living on Maggi and chai is the usual mountain vacation experience but how about you retreat to a sustainable space and discover authentic Himachali culture instead? Standing among lush Deodar trees is a property built with traditional Himachali architecture; the North estate is a three-floored house, home to architect Rahul Bhushan and his family who run a design studio in the same premises. They started this homestay for guests who want to take a break from city life and experience sustainable mountain life. While this isn’t a project-focused retreat like the others on this list, you get to meet artists, designers on Bhushan’s team who live on the premises and other guests as well.
They conduct workshops promoting Himalayan crafts, host village walks and activities where you get to truly live the pahadi life, be it learning how to cook siddu, the local Himachali bread, learning pottery or living the slow life among greenery and nature. Oh and they have two furry friends on the property who would just melt your heart into ghee.
